Lifeguard Training Courses 

If you would like to become a LARPD lifeguard, please submit a job application prior to signing up for any training. (Applications can be found here)

Upon a successful interview, we will train you internally at no additional cost. Contact Alyssa Smith (asmith@larpd.org or 925-373-5749) with any questions regarding possible employment.

LARPD's Lifeguard Training Course provides the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. Classes will be held at the Robert Livermore Aquatic Center.

Prerequisites

Participants are required to pass the prerequisite on the first class meeting to continue with the course:

  • Swim 300 yards continuously
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
  • Complete a timed event within 1 min, 40 sec by starting in the water, swimming 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-lb object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, exit the water without using steps or a ladder.

Lifeguard Training Course

Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding with Bundle 5, valid for 2 years. Fee includes books and materials.

* Class on Friday May 2nd will only be to verify the pre-requisite physical skills. If you cannot attend this date please coordinate with Alyssa Smith to re-schedule a time to verify pre-requisite skills before May 2nd.

Lifeguard Training Review - May 2025

The primary purpose of a recertification course is to give participants who are currently certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding the opportunity to review the course knowledge and skills within a formal course setting to maintain their American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification.

Prerequisites
  • Hold a current certification, or expired by no more than 30 days, in American Red Cross Lifeguarding that includes training in deep water 7 feet or deeper.
  • Must provide proof of most recent certification to instructor on first day of class. 
  • Successfully complete the Lifeguarding prerequisite swimming skills evaluations. 

Upon successful completion, the American Red Cross will issue the certificate Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid that is valid for 2 years. 

Bring a swimsuit, towel, resuscitation mask (provided), and lunch each day. Attendance is required for the entirety of the class. No make-ups allowed. 

Note: This class is NOT appropriate for students who have never taken the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course.
