Mathew Fuzie

From Summer Leader to State Park Deputy Director
Born in San Diego and raised in Modesto, he discovered his passion for recreation and parks early—starting as a summer recreation leader for Modesto City Parks while still in high school. His journey took him to Fresno State University, where he played water polo and caught the attention of the Chief Ranger at Millerton Lake State Recreation Area. A seasonal lifeguard position quickly evolved into a permanent role with the California Department of Parks and Recreation, setting him on a path that would span decades.
A Life Dedicated to Protecting Parks and People
State Park Lifeguards are trained as Peace Officers, and that became the foundation of his career. While in the academy, he and his wife Alix married, preparing for the adventures—and assignments—that lay ahead. Their first stop: Huntington and Bolsa Chica State Beaches in Huntington Beach. Three years later, they moved to the rugged beauty of the Sonoma Coast, where he helped protect visitors to Sonoma Coast State Beaches. It was during the second year that their daughter, Emma, was born, adding a new chapter to their lives.
Over the next ten years, their family moved twelve times, taking on increasingly challenging leadership roles across some of California’s most iconic parks—from Fresno and Riverside to San Diego Counties. Each move brought new experiences, lessons, and opportunities to serve the public.
Leading at the State Level
In 2005, he became the district superintendent for the Monterey District, managing a region that stretched from Big Sur to the Central Valley. Later, he transitioned to Sacramento for a series of senior roles, culminating in his appointment as Deputy Director of the California Department of Parks and Recreation by Governor Brown—a crowning achievement in a remarkable career.
Returning Home and Giving Back
In 2016, he and Alix returned to Modesto to be close to family. Retirement from the State Parks didn’t mean slowing down. Instead, he took on the role of General Manager at Livermore Area Recreation and Parks District, bringing decades of experience, leadership, and a lifelong passion for parks and recreation to serve the community.
Fun Fact: He taught himself to juggle at 16 by reading a Ken Follett fictional novel to bridge his love of reading with his fear of public presentation. He also taught his daughter to juggle at a very early age to break the ice with people.
He looks forward to serving the public and employees of this great district!
