LARPD Aquatics Recognized For Outstanding Program by BAPPOA

LIVERMORE, CA —LARPD’s Aquatics Team has been recognized by the Bay Area Public Pool Operators Association (BAPPOA) with the Outstanding Program Award for advancing aquatic safety and training for the community.
The award acknowledges the team’s successful transition from the traditional American Red Cross lifeguarding curriculum to a more modern, scenario-based program focused on prevention and real-world response. After evaluating available training models, the Aquatics Team selected the StarGuard ELITE system for its emphasis on situational awareness, teamwork, and proactive safety measures that directly support safer experiences for patrons across LARPD facilities.

Led by Recreation Supervisor Patrick Lucky and Recreation Coordinator Alyssa Smith, staff implemented the new program with a strong focus on preparedness and consistent skill development. The team also shared their transition process with other agencies at a recent BAPPOA meeting, contributing to broader regional discussions around aquatic safety improvements.
“Our goal is to give the community the highest level of safety we can,” said Patrick Lucky, Recreation Supervisor. “This training model helps lifeguards respond more effectively, stay engaged, and work together so families who visit our pools can feel confident in the protection we provide.”
LARPD appreciates BAPPOA’s acknowledgment of this work and remains committed to delivering safe, high-quality aquatic experiences for the Livermore community.
