Non Street-Legal Motorized Bikes: Message from Livermore PD

Livermore Police has recently received complaints about non-street legal motor vehicles, specifically electric dirt bikes/mini motorcycles (pocket bikes) on roadways and trails.

State law states these bikes are NOT allowed on public roadways, in parks, arroyos, or bike trails.

They are for private property use ONLY. These bikes are not street-legal as sold by retailers and distributors. They are not classified as an e-bike by California law because they exceed the top allowable speed for Class 1, 2 or 3 e-bikes. California DMV has started allowing owners to register some of these vehicles after making them street legal.

To make them legal on streets, operators must make modifications, including adding mirrors, turn signals, headlights, and taillights. Operators must also be 16 years of age and possess a valid California Driver’s License as well as a M1 or M2 motorcycle endorsement once the vehicle is registered.
