LPD Tip of the Month: Prevent Distracted Driving
April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Here are some tips to stay safe on the road and to prevent distracted driving.
Stay Safe on the Road: Tips to Prevent Distracted Driving

- Put the phone away: Texting, calling, or using apps while driving takes your attention off the road. Use “Do Not Disturb” mode or keep your phone out of reach.
- Set your GPS before you go: Enter your destination and review your route before driving.
- Avoid multitasking: Don’t eat, groom, or adjust your music or climate controls while driving. Take care of these things beforehand.
- Speak up: If you’re a passenger and the driver is distracted, say something. Your safety matters, too.
- Keep your eyes and mind on the road: Even hands-free devices can be mentally distracting. Stay focused at all times.
- Pull over if needed: If you need to make a call, send a message, or check something, pull over safely and stop your vehicle.
- Lead by example: Model safe, distraction-free driving habits, especially around young drivers.
Remember: One text or distraction can change everything. Your life and the lives of others are worth the focus.
Report suspicious people or activities to law enforcement immediately. Call 911 for all emergencies or (925) 371-4987 to report a non-emergency situation.
